Johan Claassen was born in 1943 in Beek en Donk, a region in Brabant where craftsmanship and imagination go hand in hand. From a young age he was fascinated by shapes and materials, a curiosity that led him to the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven. Here he developed a profound understanding of both the technical and expressive possibilities of art.
Claassen was an artist who did not allow himself to be limited by one medium. He moved effortlessly between sculpture, painting, drawing and assemblages. His work was characterised by a layered approach to matter and composition. Whether it concerned raw, unprocessed materials or refined, almost mathematically ordered structures, Claassen managed to capture a subtle balance between chaos and order in all his works.
In addition to his own artistic practice, he shared his insights and passion with younger generations as a teacher at various art academies. His teaching was not only technically and substantively strong, but also philosophical: he encouraged students to think beyond conventions and to approach materials as carriers of meaning.
In his later works, Claassen increasingly explored the tension between industry and nature. His assemblages, built from found objects and residual materials, gave a second life to what was often regarded as waste. In doing so, he raised critical questions about consumption and sustainability, without losing his artistic signature.
Claassen left behind an oeuvre that is both experimental and timeless. His art reflects an ongoing dialogue between form, texture and space – a conversation that will continue to resonate in the Dutch art world for a long time to come.
