    Edward Antoon Portielje (1861-1949) - Back from fishing

    Edward Antoon Portielje, a Belgian painter, born in Antwerp in an artist family. He was taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp by Charles Verlat. As impressionism grew stronger, Portielje continued to paint in a realistic way. He often chose genre scenes and anecdotal subjects from society, but also made this particularly beautiful beach scene, the return of fishing. Striking about this work, oil on canvas, is not only the impressive cloud and light scene, but also the signature. This work has been signed twice, both right and bottom left.

    Edward Antoon Portielje, peintre belge, né à Anvers dans une famille d'artistes. Il a été enseigné à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts d'Anvers par Charles Verlat. Alors que l'impressionnisme se renforçait, Portielje a continué à peindre de manière réaliste. Il a souvent choisi des scènes de genre et des sujets anecdotiques issus de la société, mais a également réalisé cette scène de plage particulièrement belle, le retour de la pêche.
