    The farmyard painted by Charles Boland is atypical for his oeuvre. He mostly painted animal scenes, in line with artists like Henriette Ronner-Knip. This scene depicts a farmyard in a hilly landscape, with great attention to the effect of the raking sunlight coming in from the right. Throughout the painting he used a loose touch, suggestively applying paint.

    Dit boerenerf van Charles Boland is atypisch voor het werk van Boland. Hij schilderde voornamelijk dieren, in lijn met schilderijen van kunstenaars als Henriëtte Ronner-Knip. Dit schilderij verbeeldt een boerenerf in een heuvelachtig landschap. Boland besteedde veel aandacht aan het effect van het zonlicht dat vanaf rechts komt. Door het hele schilderij gebruikte hij een losse toets, schilderend met veel suggestie.

    Charles H.D. Boland de Spa (Anvers, 1850 – ?) était un peintre belge, spécialisé dans les animaux, les paysages, les scènes de genre et les portraits,

    Il reçoit sa formation artistique à l'Académie d'Anvers, il participe au « Prix de Rome » en 1878.

    Il fut l'un des cofondateurs, le 25 octobre 1883, de l'association anversoise des artistes plasticiens Als ik Kan, dont Henry Van de Velde fut également membre pendant très peu de temps.
