Ferenc Gögös (1936-2011), born in Budapest, came to the Netherlands in 1957, when his freedom was threatened in his homeland. He enrolled at the Academy of Arts in Arnhem to study painting and graphic arts. His works are composed of signs, messages that communicate their meaning. The image replaces language. If one emerges oneself into the works, one discovers several recognizable images, like a man, a woman, a deer, a bird or a tree. Other signs only make sense in combination with the surrounding images. Darts, zigzags, edges, and straight lines connect these symbols. Gögös symbols relate to popular arts or “primitive” arts which gives them a universal character. His Hungarian origins can be sensed especially in the early works. Tingling color planes comprising monumental signs are witness to a great sensibility for materials and colors.

Ferenc Gögös (1936 Budapest – 2011 Oosterbeek) emigrò da Budapest nei Paesi Bassi nel 1957, perché non poteva vivere in libertà nella sua terra natale, l'Ungheria. Ha frequentato l'Accademia delle Arti di Arnhem, studiando pittura e arti grafiche. Era particolarmente interessato a segni e simboli. Gögös disegna e dipinge segni e messaggi in cui l'immagine sostituisce il linguaggio. Queste immagini sono identificabili e semplici: un cervo, un uomo, una donna, un albero o un uccello. Frecce, linee a zigzag, barre angolari e linee rette li collegano. I simboli di Gögos dimostrano affinità con le arti primitive, il che conferisce loro un carattere universale. Ferenc Gögös ha esposto frequentemente nei Paesi Bassi e all'estero, tra gli altri ad Arnhem, Amsterdam, Nijmegen, Gand, Budapest, Kyoto, Corea del Sud, California e Ohio (U.S.A.) e alla fiera d'arte di Basilea.
