  Roger Raveel (1921-2013) was a Belgian painter known for probing the border between reality and fiction in his work. A painter between post-expressionism and pop-art. Raveel playfully arranged motifs culled from everyday life, morphing bicyclists, birds, and striped poles closer or further away from abstraction depending on the painting. Born on July 15, 1921 in Machelen-aan-de-Leie, Belgium, he went on to study at the art academies in both Ghent and Deinze. Raveel notably made a pilgrimage to visit the elderly artist James Ensor during the mid-1940s in the town of Ostend. Ensor’s themes sometimes manifested themselves in Raveel’s work, as seen in his Memory of my Mother’s Deathbed (1965) which recalls the former artist’s My Dead Mother (1915). Raveel died at the age of 91 on January 30, 2013 in Deinze, Belgium. Today, his works are held in the collections of SMAK (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst) in Ghent, the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem, Netherlands, and the Roger Raveel Museum in his hometown of Machelen-aan-de-Leie, among others.

  Pittore, disegnatore e grafico post-espressionista, legato alla Pop Art, di cui è precursore. Lavora in questa direzione dal 1952. Realizza anche ceramiche e oggetti d'arte.

  Studiò all'Accademia di Deinze (1937-40, H. Malfait) e di Gand (1941-45, J. Verdegem). Studi di ceramica all'Accademia di Gand (1954) e in Italia (1962). Dipinge affreschi nelle cantine del castello di Beervelde (1966-67). Docente all'Accademia di Deinze (1960-73). Menzionato JPB (1958 e 60) e Premio Europeo di Pittura (Ostenda, 1962).

  Dal 1948 in poi, sviluppa uno stile molto personale e costruisce un nuovo linguaggio plastico a partire da una nuova percezione degli oggetti nel suo ambiente. Si impegna per un'intensa interazione tra il dipinto e lo spettatore.

  Ha rappresentato il nostro Paese nel 1968 alla Biennale di Venezia e alla Documenta Kassel. Elevato al rango nobiliare nel 1994. Lavora nella stazione della metropolitana Merode a Bruxelles. Nel 1999 viene inaugurato il Museo Raveel (architetto: S. Beel) nel suo villaggio natale. Lavora nei musei di Anversa, Bruges, Bruxelles, Gand, Liegi, Ostenda e in numerosi musei nei Paesi Bassi.
