  Roger Raveel (1921-2013) was a Belgian painter known for probing the border between reality and fiction in his work. A painter between post-expressionism and pop-art. Raveel playfully arranged motifs culled from everyday life, morphing bicyclists, birds, and striped poles closer or further away from abstraction depending on the painting. Born on July 15, 1921 in Machelen-aan-de-Leie, Belgium, he went on to study at the art academies in both Ghent and Deinze. Raveel notably made a pilgrimage to visit the elderly artist James Ensor during the mid-1940s in the town of Ostend. Ensor’s themes sometimes manifested themselves in Raveel’s work, as seen in his Memory of my Mother’s Deathbed (1965) which recalls the former artist’s My Dead Mother (1915). Raveel died at the age of 91 on January 30, 2013 in Deinze, Belgium. Today, his works are held in the collections of SMAK (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst) in Ghent, the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem, Netherlands, and the Roger Raveel Museum in his hometown of Machelen-aan-de-Leie, among others.

  Pintor, desenhista e artista gráfico pós-expressionista, ligado à Pop Art, da qual é precursor. Atua nessa direção desde 1952. Também cria cerâmicas e objetos de arte.

  Estudou nas Academias de Deinze (1937-40, H. Malfait) e Ghent (1941-45, J. Verdegem). Estudos em cerâmica na Academia de Gante (1954) e em Itália (1962). Pinta afrescos nas caves do Castelo de Beervelde (1966-67). Professor na Academia de Deinze (1960-73). Mencionado JPB (1958 e 60) e Prémio Europeu de Pintura (Oostende, 1962).

  A partir de 1948 desenvolve um estilo muito pessoal e constrói uma nova linguagem plástica a partir de uma nova percepção dos objetos do seu ambiente. Ele busca uma interação intensa entre a pintura e o espectador.

  Representou o nosso país em 1968 na Biönnale de Veneza e na Documenta Kassel. Elevado à categoria de nobreza em 1994. Trabalha na estação de metrô Merode, em Bruxelas. Um Museu Raveel (arquiteto: S. Beel) em sua aldeia natal foi inaugurado em 1999. Trabalha nos museus de Antuérpia, Bruges, Bruxelas, Gante, Liège, Ostende, bem como em vários museus na Holanda.
