- Over kunstwerkA Modernist partly hammered silver dish, model TW 290. Designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1966. Handmade to order by the craftsmen of Kultakeskus in 1974.
A simular dish is part of the famous Kakkonen collection, now shown by the Emma museum in Espoo, Finland. There was also a smaller size made of this model which was made in serial production.
This particular example weights an impressive 991 grams, is fully hallmarked underneath the base and is in very good condition.

Tapio Wirkkala (1915 Hanko, Finland – 1985 Helsinki, Finland) A giant of Finnish design, possessed an extraordinary creative spirit that knew no boundaries. This silver dish is in very good condition, Some minor scratches consistent with age and use. No dents. No inscriptions.

Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was een veelzijdig ontwerpgenie, algemeen beschouwd als een leidende figuur van de moderne Finse industriële kunst. Wirkkala's uitgebreide portfolio strekt zich uit van glas, meubels en productontwerp tot beeldhouwkunst, stadsplanning, kunst, grafiek en zelfs het maken van bankbiljetten voor de Finse schatkist.
Gedurende zijn ongelooflijk productieve carrière ontving Wirkkala talloze onderscheidingen, waaronder drie gouden medailles op de Triënnale van Milaan, de Lunning Prize, Pro Finlandia Medal en de Prince Eugen Medal.
In 1946 won Wirkkala zijn eerste designprijs in een door Iittala gesponsorde wedstrijd die een levenslange relatie zou markeren met blijvende gevolgen voor zijn carrière en het bedrijf. Als artistiek directeur van Iittala heeft Wirkkala's unieke artistieke visie bijgedragen aan de wereldwijde reputatie van het bedrijf.
Gedurende zijn legendarische carrière creëerde de uniek getalenteerde kunstenaar meer dan vierhonderd glazen objecten voor Iittala, waarvan vele, zoals de Ultima Thule- en Tapio-series, nog steeds populair zijn.
