About the artist
Budi Agung Kuswara, born in 1982 in Bali, Indonesia, is an artist who bridges the gap between tradition and modernity. Deeply rooted in the rich culture of his native country, he uses his art as a means to explore the complex relationship between heritage, identity and social change. His work reflects not only the beauty of Bali, but also the dynamic interaction between the past and the contemporary world.
After graduating from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta, where he received his BA in Fine Art in 2009, Kuswara developed a unique artistic language. His paintings and multidisciplinary works combine traditional Balinese techniques with contemporary interpretations, making him an innovative voice in the Indonesian art scene.
Kuswara’s work focuses strongly on cultural identity and social environments, exploring themes such as heritage, colonial legacies and the impact of globalization on local traditions. Through his art, he not only seeks to preserve the beauty of Balinese mythology and folk tales, but also to critically reflect on the changes in society. His works often show a balance between the spiritual and the material, between the past and the future.
In addition to his own artistry, Kuswara is an active participant in the art community. He is the co-founder of Ketemu Project, a platform that uses art as a tool for social impact and promotes collaboration between artists and communities. Through this initiative, he encourages inclusive creativity and the preservation of cultural stories through contemporary art practices.
Budi Agung Kuswara remains a key figure in contemporary Balinese art. His work is not only an expression of personal identity, but also a dialogue between heritage and modernity—an invitation to see Bali through the lens of tradition, transformation, and artistic innovation.
