About the artist

Evert Jan Ligtelijn was born in 1893 in the city of Amsterdam. His living and working situations were concentrated in and around the cities of Amsterdam, Naarden and Amstelveen. In addition to this he was known to travel often; his travels to the Canary Islands and South and Central America are examples of this.

The subjects of his work tend to vary from Mediterranean scenes to cityscapes, such as those of Amsterdam. His depictions of river views of the Vecht river are in high demand as well. Particularly in these cityscapes-in atmospheres of both summer and winter- a recognizable smooth way of working stands out.

During a period of stay in the city of Bergen, the Netherlands, he worked with Harrie Kuyten, with whom he became friends. Ligtelijn was known as a lifelong friend of painter Nico Bruijnestein as well.

Ligtelijn passed awat in Laren, 1975.
