About the artist

Onno Boerwinkel (1921–1985) was a Dutch artist who defied categorization. He began his career as a painter and graphic artist, but it soon became clear that his curious and investigative spirit would lead him to a wide range of disciplines. Boerwinkel worked with paint, wood, textiles, and found objects, constantly exploring the boundaries between art and applied design.

His early work reveals a fascination with line and composition: graphic structures that radiate rhythm and order, but are often interrupted by playful or unpredictable elements. In the 1960s and 1970s, he developed into an artist who strongly responded to the social changes of his time. His works became more colorful, freer in form, and increasingly linked to themes such as nature, spirituality, and the search for inner balance.

Boerwinkel also taught and encouraged younger generations of artists to remain unconventional and unafraid to experiment. His classes and workshops were praised for their intensity and openness: he saw art not as a finished product, but as a living process in constant motion.

His oeuvre reads like a chronicle of a life filled with curiosity and imagination. From graphic precision to intuitive paintings and objects: Onno Boerwinkel continually sought ways to unite order and chaos, reason and emotion, matter and spirit. His legacy is that of an artist who approached art as a form of life philosophy.
