About the artist
Gesina “Geesje” Mesdag-van-Calcar was a Dutch artist who was born in Hoogezand in 1850.
She died in Scheveningen in 1936. Gesina Mesdag-van-Calcar was apprenticed to P.J.C. Gabriël at the Academie Minerva (State Academy of Fine Arts) in Groningen.
She married with painter Taco Mesdag (1829-1902), the brother of the famous the Hague School painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag.
After their marriage, they settled in The Hague, where she became a member of the art society Pulchri Studio.
She painted flowers, polder landscapes, still lifes and interiors in an impressionist style.
