in het Stedelijk Museum te Amsterdam 1923 - About the artist
B.J. Blommers's paintings and watercolours immortalise the homely existence of farmers and of the fishermen in Katwijk aan Zee and Scheveningen. Jozef Israëls was a major influence on his work, but whereas Israëls tended to emphasise the miserable conditions in which these classes lived, Blommers preferred to focus on the joys of family life.
His interiors radiate contentment and good cheer. Blommers enjoyed immense popularity in his own day, especially abroad.
