Harry Bertoia (March 10, 1915 – November 6, 1978) was an Italian-American artist, sculptor, sound art pioneer, and influential modern furniture designer. He is considered one of the most versatile and innovative designers of the twentieth century, with an oeuvre that uniquely broke down the boundaries between art, design, architecture, and sound.

Bertoia was born in San Lorenzo, Italy, and emigrated to the United States at a young age. He studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, a breeding ground for modernist design and artistic innovation. There, he collaborated with leading figures such as Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, which had a lasting influence on his multidisciplinary approach.

In the 1950s, Harry Bertoia achieved international fame as a furniture designer with his iconic wire steel chairs for Knoll, including the famous Diamond Chair. These designs combine sculptural elegance with functional comfort and are considered milestones in modernist design. To this day, Bertoia's furniture remains among the most recognizable and collected design objects in the world.

Parallel to his design practice, Bertoia developed an impressive oeuvre as a sculptor. Working primarily with metal, he created abstract, often monumental sculptures that play with space, light, and movement. His best-known artistic contribution lies in his groundbreaking sound sculptures, or Sonambient works: groups of metal rods and elements that produce subtle, meditative sounds through touch or air movement. With these, Bertoia positioned himself as an early pioneer of sound art.

Bertoia saw sound as an intrinsic part of sculpture and considered his works as living, sensory environments. In the 1960s and 1970s, he devoted himself almost entirely to these Sonambient installations, presenting them both in concert format and as permanent installations.
