About the artist
Jan Gerardus Casteelen was born in Leiden in 1795, he died in Leiden in 1847. Initially, he was a stonecutter, like his father J. Casteelen. From 1819 onwards J.G. Casteelen began a professional career as a painter, specialising in landscapes. He exhibited in Haarlem and Amsterdam. Various works are included in the collection of Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden.
