    This still life painting was painted by Maria Geertruida Barbiers. It shows her mastery of technique and composition, convincingly depicting the different textures of the fruits, flowers and foliage. The composition is related to a lithograph in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum [link].

De overtuigende weergave van de verschillende texturen van het fruit, de bloemen en bladeren toont haar beheersing van schildertechniek en compositie. Deze compositie is gerelateerd aan een lithografie van haar hand in het Rijksmuseum [link].

  • About the artist

    Maria Geertruida Barbiers (Haarlem, January 25, 1801 – January 30, 1879) was a Dutch painter.

    Barbiers was a member of the Barbiers family of painters and was a daughter of painters Pieter Barbiers (1771-1837) and Maria Geertruida Snabilie (1773-1838). Her brother Pieter Barbiers (1798-1848) was also a painter. In 1823 she married painter Pieter de Goeje (1789-1859).

    Barbiers learned to paint from her parents, who both painted. Like her mother, she mainly painted flower and fruit still lifes.

    However, she also did lithography. She signed her work as 'M.G. de Goeje Barbiers'.Barbiers in turn taught Elisabeth Johanna Koning, who would become known as a still life painter.
