About the artist

Jan Baptists Verberckt I (1735-1819) was a Belgian silversmith who was born in Antwerpen. He was the son of silversmith Michiel Verberckt and Joanna Maria Buyssens. He studied at the academy between 1751-1754. In 1756 he visited his uncle, the sculptor Jacques Ver-berckt, in Paris. He was awarded a prize at the Antwerp academy in 1761, 1766 and 1767. Although he was in his father’s service, he signed the works himself. In 1767 he married Sa-ra Maria Gillekens (Gielkens). He was appointed master in 1771 and took over his father’s workshop in 1775. Verbeckt was also a professor at the academy. He became master in 1794 and member of the board in 1803. His son Jan Baptist II Verbeckt (1774-1838) took over the workshop in 1811. He died in 1819.
