Jan van Luijn was born in Utrecht in 1916 and would remain closely connected to his birthplace throughout his life, where he also died in 1995. He belongs to the generation of Dutch artists who helped shape the urban and cultural landscape after the Second World War, with a distinct preference for sculpture in public spaces.

Van Luijn trained at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, where he mastered the craft of sculpting in both stone and bronze. His early work was strongly figurative, but he soon developed a style in which austere and simplified elements played a significant role. This gave his sculptures a monumental, sometimes almost architectural, appearance, without losing their human and accessible character.

A significant portion of his oeuvre consists of commissions for municipalities and institutions. From the 1950s to the 1970s, when many new neighborhoods, schools, and public buildings were constructed, his works were regularly installed. His sculptures are characterized by powerful volumes, a clear composition, and a strong connection to the place for which they were created.

Besides monumental work, Van Luijn also created smaller sculptures, often in bronze, in which he developed human figures or animal motifs. These more intimate sculptures demonstrate that he not only thought in terms of monumentality but also captured the subtlety of movement and emotion.

His work is still visible in Utrecht and the surrounding area, but sculptures by him can also be found in other parts of the Netherlands. This makes him an artist who has unknowingly enriched the everyday lives of many: his sculptures stand in squares, at schools, and in parks, inviting proximity and encounter.

Jan van Luijn is considered a typical representative of Dutch post-war sculpture: skilled, rooted in the figurative tradition, and simultaneously searching for a modern, clear formal language that is enduringly meaningful in public spaces.
