About the artist

Johan Bakker (Baflo, 1889 – Bennekom, 1975) was a Dutch painter best known for his understated and artisanal painting, rooted in the Groningen landscape and village life. He lived and worked most of his life in Warffum, where he also worked as a house painter in addition to his artistic practice. This practical background gave his work a down-to-earth, honest approach and a strong sense of material, color, and craftsmanship.

Bakker trained at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, where he further refined his technical skills and developed within the tradition of Northern Netherlandish painting. His oeuvre consists primarily of landscapes, village scenes, and still lifes, in which tranquility, simplicity, and attention to light and atmosphere are central. Johan Bakker's paintings are characterized by a restrained composition, a harmonious use of color, and a strong connection with the Groningen countryside.

As an artist, Johan Bakker remained close to his surroundings and world. His work reflects daily life in the northern Netherlands in the first half of the twentieth century, making it a valuable snapshot of the times. Today, his work is appreciated by enthusiasts of realistic and regional painting and is regularly found in private collections and on the Dutch art market.
