About the artist
Marieke de Jong (born 1966, Leeuwarden) is a Dutch artist whose work reflects a deep connection with the Frisian landscape. She grew up surrounded by space, water, and nature—elements that have permanently shaped her visual language.
The expansive horizon lines, the changing light, and the tranquility of the landscape are both a source of inspiration and a subject for De Jong. Her paintings and drawings often exude a sense of openness and reflection, giving the viewer the space to find their own meaning. She depicts nature not simply as a backdrop, but as a living presence, full of rhythm and layering.
Besides the landscape, the interaction between people and their environment also plays a role in her work. Subtle structures, color planes, and textures allude to memories, traces, and movements that time leaves behind in nature. De Jong combines a refined eye for detail with a sense of abstraction, giving her work a recognizable yet poetic quality.
With her oeuvre, Marieke de Jong places herself in the tradition of northern artists who translate the power of the landscape into a contemporary and personal visual language. Her art invites tranquility and offers a window into the essence of her Frisian roots.
