About the artist

Ruud Verkerk was born in 1957 in Stolwijk, near Gouda. He developed into a realistic artist with a keen eye for tranquility and subtle composition. Initially, he trained at the Vocational School for Goldsmiths in Schoonhoven (1974-1978), after which he studied for approximately eighteen months at the art academy in Rotterdam. He also took private lessons in classical painting techniques, further honing his craft.

Since 1980, Verkerk has been working fully as a painter. In the first phase of his career, fantasy was central to his work, but his interest soon shifted to still lifes and landscapes in a clear, subdued realistic style. He finds inspiration in the Dutch landscape, still life objects such as porcelain, flowers, and ceramics, and he continually explores variations on familiar themes. His compositions are characterized by tranquility, balance, and a subtle use of light and color. In his later work, the horizon—often as it appears in polder landscapes—is a recurring element, as is the choice of a bright color palette and a restrained use of mediums. Verkerk also experiments with incorporating historical masterpieces into contemporary contexts: works by old masters sometimes appear as "postcards on the wall" within his still lifes, or are adapted into new variations that merge classical themes with contemporary elements.

As a drawing and painting instructor, Verkerk enjoys sharing his knowledge and techniques with others. He works with a variety of techniques and themes in lessons, finding the group dynamic stimulating and adhering to the motto: "It always works."

He has lived and worked in Gouda for many years. Verkerk has had exhibitions at major galleries in the Dutch-speaking world within his specializations. His oeuvre can be seen in private collections and at art auctions. In 2016, he was honored with a major anniversary exhibition entitled Helder Licht (Clear Light), which highlighted his career, which has spanned decades of refinement and development.

A certain striving for perfection is evident in his work: he sees each painting as a new attempt to achieve improvement. Verkerk is therefore not only an artist but also a researcher—in his own silence, with subtle brushstrokes and a continuous dialogue between tradition and innovation.
