About the artist
Stephen Wilkes (born October 28, 1957) is an American photographer, photojournalist, director, and visual artist who gained international renown for his innovative approach to viewing time and space. He is best known for his iconic Day to Night series, in which he combines hundreds to thousands of photos of a single location into one seamless image that captures an entire day—from sunrise to deep into the night—in a single composition.
Wilkes began his career as a commercial and editorial photographer but soon developed into an artist with a distinct visual signature. His work operates at the intersection of documentary and art, transforming everyday places into layered, almost cinematic narratives. By observing and photographing at a single location for extended periods, he manages to capture both the rhythm of daily life and the subtle changes in light, atmosphere, and human activity.
In addition to his artistic practice, Wilkes worked as a director and documentary filmmaker, and has published several photobooks. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is part of major museum and private collections. With his ability to condense time into a single image, he creates visual stories that are both technically impressive and emotionally resonant.
