  • About the artist

Léonard Pelgrims was a Belgian painter best known for his artistic depictions of Africa, particularly the former Belgian Congo. Active during the first half of the twentieth century, Pelgrims became associated with the tradition of Belgian colonial art, a movement in which European artists documented and interpreted the landscapes, people, and daily life of colonial territories through painting and drawing.

Born in Belgium in 1894, Pelgrims developed his artistic career during a period when Congo occupied an important place within Belgian cultural and political consciousness. Like several artists of his generation, he travelled to Central Africa and found inspiration in its tropical landscapes, villages, rivers, markets, and local communities. These experiences became the central theme of much of his oeuvre.

Pelgrims’ paintings are characterized by warm color palettes, atmospheric light, and vivid portrayals of African scenery. His work often focused on the interplay between landscape and human activity, capturing bustling village scenes, river life, vegetation, and the intense sunlight of equatorial Africa. Stylistically, his paintings combine elements of realism with a decorative and impressionistic approach to color and composition.

Within the broader context of colonial art, Pelgrims’ work reflected the fascination many European artists held for Africa during the colonial era. Today, such works are viewed not only as artistic productions but also as historical documents shaped by the cultural and political perspectives of their time. His paintings provide insight into how Belgian artists visually interpreted colonial territories and contributed to the imagery surrounding the Congo during the twentieth century.

Despite the changing perception of colonial-era art in contemporary discourse, Pelgrims remains recognized for his technical skill and his ability to convey atmosphere, light, and environmental richness. His paintings continue to appear in Belgian collections and auctions, particularly among collectors interested in African-themed European modern art and colonial-period painting.

Today, Léonard Pelgrims is remembered as a significant representative of Belgian colonial painting, whose colorful and atmospheric works captured the landscapes and visual culture of Central Africa during a complex and historically important period.
