  • About the artist

Marcel Stobbaerts was a distinguished Belgian painter, printmaker, illustrator, and watercolorist whose artistic career spanned much of the twentieth century. Born on May 2, 1899, he inherited a strong artistic legacy as the grandson of the renowned realist painter Jan Stobbaerts. While rooted in this rich tradition, Marcel Stobbaerts developed an artistic voice entirely his own, characterized by stylistic versatility, emotional sensitivity, and an enduring fascination with everyday life.

Throughout his long career, Stobbaerts moved through several distinct creative periods. His early works often reflected the social realities and tensions of the interwar years, combining expressive brushwork with sharp observations of modern society. During this phase, his compositions revealed both empathy and subtle criticism, positioning him within a broader European tradition of socially engaged art.

Over time, his style evolved toward a more intimate and poetic realism. He became particularly admired for his atmospheric watercolors, nuanced portraits, still lifes, and scenes of ordinary Belgian life rendered with warmth and quiet humanity. His technical mastery across multiple media — from oil painting and etching to illustration and watercolor — demonstrated both discipline and experimentation, allowing him to continuously renew his artistic language without losing his personal identity.

Stobbaerts also worked extensively as an illustrator and graphic artist, contributing to books, periodicals, and cultural publications. His graphic work displayed a refined sense of composition and line, often balancing elegance with narrative clarity. Across all mediums, he maintained a remarkable ability to capture mood, gesture, and fleeting moments with understated sophistication.

Although deeply connected to Belgian artistic traditions, Marcel Stobbaerts remained open to broader modern influences throughout his life. His oeuvre reflects a dialogue between realism and modernity, between observation and emotion. Today, he is remembered as a multifaceted artist whose work bridges generations of Belgian art, linking the realism of the nineteenth century with the evolving sensibilities of the twentieth.

Marcel Stobbaerts passed away on his eightieth birthday, May 2, 1979, leaving behind a diverse and enduring body of work that continues to be appreciated for its humanity, craftsmanship, and poetic atmosphere.
