  • About the artist

Frans Slager (’s-Hertogenbosch, 1876 – Meerhout (Belgium), 1953) was a Dutch painter from a prominent family of artists, known for his atmospheric landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes and figure pieces. His work is characterised by a refined technique, an intimate use of colour and a balanced composition, with which he managed to elevate the everyday to something timeless.

Frans Slager was the son of the painter Petrus Marinus Slager and grew up in an environment steeped in art. The Slager family would later be immortalised in ’s-Hertogenbosch with the Museum Slager, named after them, dedicated to the work of several generations. Frans studied at the Royal School for Useful and Visual Arts in his hometown and continued his studies at the prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

His painting style is in the tradition of late impressionism, with influences from the Hague School and the Flemish realists. He had a preference for atmospheric light, soft contours and warm, subdued colours. Slager often painted intimate interiors, still lifes with flowers or fruit, and atmospheric landscapes with an almost melancholic undertone. His works exude peace, attention and craftsmanship.

In addition to his own artistic work, Slager was also active as a teacher and involved in cultural life in both the Netherlands and Belgium. He lived and worked in Belgium for a long time, including in Meerhout, where he eventually died. His international existence was reflected in his work, which sometimes combined the soberness of the Dutch light with the lush atmosphere of the Belgian landscape.

Frans Slager is remembered as a refined observer of daily life and a quiet force within the figurative painting of his time. His oeuvre, full of dedication and subdued beauty, forms an important part of the cultural heritage of the Slager family and of the Brabant art tradition.
