Dirk Cornelis Elffers, also called Dick Cornelis Elffers, was born in Rotterdam on 9 December 1910. He died in Amsterdam on 17 June 1990. He lived and worked in Rotterdam until 1941, thereafter he lived in Amsterdam. He studied at the Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam. Elffers is a draughtsman, painter, book binding designer, graphic artist, illustrator, sculptor, ceramist and photographer. Between 1970 and 1976 he taught at the art academy in Den Bosch. Elffers received for his typographic work the State Award for Typography. His work is included in the collection of the Joods Historisch Museum. Elffers was also a designer at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, specialising in graphic design and exhibition design. His son Joost Elffers was a writer, visual artist and illustrator.
