  • About the artist

Giovanni Battista Filosa (1850–1935) was an Italian painter renowned for his detailed depictions of Neapolitan life, landscapes, and genre scenes. Born in Castellammare di Stabia, a town near Naples, Filosa maintained a profound connection to his homeland, dedicating much of his artistic career to portraying the daily activities of local farmers and fishermen.

In 1874, Filosa ventured to Paris, immersing himself in the vibrant art scene of the time. During his stay, he embraced subjects inspired by the neo-seventeenth-century style popularized by Spanish painter Mariano Fortuny, reflecting the prevailing artistic trends in the French capital.

Despite the allure of Paris, Filosa eventually returned to his native Naples. Back in his homeland, he refocused on capturing the essence of Neapolitan landscapes and everyday life. His works are characterized by meticulous attention to detail, showcasing his descriptive expertise in rendering the nuances of his subjects.

Throughout his career, Filosa's paintings were frequently featured in auctions, reflecting their enduring appeal among collectors. His legacy is marked by a commitment to realism and a deep appreciation for the culture and people of southern Italy.
