Lodewijk Juliaan Sabin Van Cutsem (Evere, May 12, 1909 – Schaerbeek, 1992) was a Belgian sculptor and draftsman who worked under the name Louis Van Cutsem. In his signature, he used variations such as Van Cutsem Louis, Van Cutsem L., or L. Van Cutsem, through which he shaped a recognizable yet flexible identity as an artist.
Van Cutsem developed an oeuvre that moved between sculpture and drawing, in which the human figure played a central role. His sculptures bear witness to a strong attention to form, volume, and balance, often with a restrained expression that suggests rather than explicitly shows. In his drawings, a more direct, exploratory line work emerges, as if he were preparing or deepening the essence of his sculptural work through the paper.
Working within the context of twentieth-century Belgian art, Van Cutsem positioned himself outside the most pronounced avant-garde movements. Instead, he opted for a more timeless approach, in which craftsmanship and observation took center stage. His style aligns with a figurative tradition but without becoming academically rigid; there always remains room for simplification and personal interpretation.
Although he did not achieve widespread international fame, Van Cutsem leaves behind a consistent and carefully constructed oeuvre.
