  • About the artist

Pierre de Soete (Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, 1886 – Brussels, 1948) was a leading Belgian sculptor and medallist, known for his refined portraiture, monumental sculptures, and influential contributions to medal making in Belgium in the first half of the twentieth century.

De Soete was born in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, a dynamic Brussels municipality where crafts and industry converged. He trained at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, where he specialized in sculpture and developed a strong academic foundation in anatomy, composition, and modeling. He demonstrated an exceptional talent for capturing character and expression early on, both in three-dimensional sculpture and in relief.

As a sculptor, Pierre de Soete worked in stone, bronze, and plaster, gaining fame with portrait busts, memorial sculptures, and monumental works for public spaces. His style combines a classical formal language with a restrained modernity, typical of the interwar period. De Soete's sculptures are characterised by a clear structure, balanced proportions and a restrained yet powerful expression.
