  • About the artist

Cornelis Hubertus Johannes (Kees) Pasmans (1899–1928) was a Dutch painter who spent his short but promising career primarily in ’s-Hertogenbosch. At a time when the Dutch art world was evolving between tradition and modernity, Pasmans managed to develop his own recognizable signature within figurative painting.

Pasmans focused on a classical genre repertoire of still lifes, landscapes, and portraits. His work is characterized by careful composition, attention to light, and restrained use of color. In his still lifes, he demonstrates a keen eye for composition and texture, in which everyday objects acquire a serene, almost meditative quality. His landscapes exude tranquility and connection with the environment, often with a subtle emphasis on atmosphere and seasonal influences. In his portraits, the focus lies on character and presence, whereby he manages to achieve strong psychological depth using relatively simple means. Although his life and career were abruptly cut short by his early death at the age of only 28, Pasmans' work bears witness to remarkable artistic maturity. His oeuvre shows that he developed rapidly and was possibly on the verge of gaining broader recognition within the Dutch art world.

Today, Kees Pasmans is remembered as a talented painter whose work, although limited in scope, offers an authentic and honest view of his time and environment.
