Albert Roelofs was een zoon van de beroemde landschapschilder Willem Roelofs. Hij werd opgeleid aan de Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag en Académie Julian in Parijs. Na zijn tijd aan de Haagse academie keerde Roelofs voor enkele jaren terug naar Brussel. Van 1897 tot aan zijn dood in 1920 zou hij echter in Den Haag wonen. Hij verliet zijn woonplaats alleen voor een lang verblijf in Parijs (1911-1912). Roelofs was lid van Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, de Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij en Pulchri Studio in Den Haag. Hij gaf schilderles aan de Nederlandse koningin Wilhelmina en prinses Juliana. Roelofs schilderde aanvankelijk landschappen, maar ging over naar genrestukken en portretten. Zijn vrouw Tjieke was zijn favoriete model; hij schilderde haar meermaals in olieverf en aquarel. Het zijn werken die een intieme, huiselijke sfeer weergeven.
About the artist
Albert Roelofs was born in Brussels in 1877, the son of the famous landscape artist Willem Roelofs. After some initial drawing and painting lessons by his father, he attended the Academy in The Hague from 1893. Three years later he returned to his native city. Initially he painted landscapes, but he gradually developed a preference for genre paintings and portraits.
His most loyal model was his wife, Tjieke, who inspired him to produce countless figure paintings that speak of intimate and homely happiness.
His work was especially popular among the Belgian bourgeoisie.
