  • About the artist

Andries van den Berg (1852–1944) was a Dutch painter whose oeuvre bridges the gap between Romanticism and Impressionism. His work is characterized by a warm view of everyday life, with a preference for rural scenes, interiors and still lifes.

Born on 19 May 1852 in The Hague, Van den Berg showed an interest in art at an early age. Although his parents were initially skeptical about a career as a painter, he began his career as a lithographer. From 1867 he attended evening classes at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where he later became a teacher himself. His students included Jan Wittenberg, Leendert van der Vlist and his son Willem van den Berg.

Van den Berg began his artistic career in a Romantic style, but around 1900 he developed a more Impressionist approach. His subjects varied from dune landscapes and farm interiors to floral still lifes and figure pieces. In addition, he was a skilled graphic artist. His works often reflect daily life and radiate a sense of peace and intimacy.

Van den Berg's paintings have been regularly auctioned and appreciated by collectors. Some notable works are: Poort te Zutphen, an oil painting depicting a cityscape; Piepers jassen, an interior scene of a mother and child; and Still Life with Fruit, Glass and a Silver Dish, a delicate still life. His works can be found in collections of the Rijksmuseum, Paleis Het Loo and the Drents Museum, among others.

As a teacher at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Van den Berg had a lasting influence on the next generation of artists. His son, Willem van den Berg, followed in his footsteps and also became a renowned painter. Van den Berg died on 14 February 1944 in his birthplace The Hague.

Van den Berg's work remains beloved for the timeless charm and craftsmanship with which he captured Dutch life.
