- About the artist
Simeon Nijenhuis (born 1969) is an artist whose work centers on transforming reality. By translating what he sees and experiences into new images, metaphors emerge that invite the viewer to reflect and interpret. For Nijenhuis, this process is the most important function of visual art: transcending reality and adding a deeper layer.
His paintings and drawings often move between reality and imagination. He draws on recognizable forms and situations, but distorts, shifts, and combines elements to create a new, poetic reality. This creates works that are simultaneously alienating and familiar, as if evoking something we know but cannot precisely define.
The layering of his work is evident not only in its content but also in its technical aspects. Nijenhuis experiments with color, structure, and composition, allowing room for tension between control and chance. The viewer thus becomes a participant in his search for meaning and balance.
In Simeon Nijenhuis's oeuvre, art doesn't simply record what exists. It's about transformation: the creation of images that reach beyond the visible and create new metaphors for human existence.
