Jean Pezous is a French painter.
He was born in Toulon, France in March of 1815. He studied with Senequier, who taught at the nautical school. He then went to Paris and studied under Orsel. He lived for a time at Bondy (Seine-St-Denis) and from 1846 to 1880 exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon. Pezous produced a large number of small paintings on a variety of different subjects, often introducing many figures. (Source: Benezit: Dictionary of Artists, vol. 10, p. 1299)

Jean Pezous (Toulon, 1815 – Paris, 1885) was a French painter who moved between neoclassicism and realism, with an oeuvre that became famous mainly for his large historical paintings, genre scenes and religious compositions. Although he was not considered one of the most groundbreaking artists during his lifetime, he was certainly appreciated for his craftsmanship, compositional talent and his ability to combine drama with subdued emotion.
After a classical education at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Pezous began his career painting religious subjects and scenes from classical antiquity. His work was selected early on for the Paris Salon, where he exhibited regularly. Later, his style evolved towards more realistic and intimate representations, with attention to the human gesture and the psychological depth of his characters.
Pezous was especially praised for his large murals and decorative work in churches and public buildings. His ability to convey a story with clear use of colour and balanced compositions made him a sought-after artist for institutional commissions. In addition to paintings, he also made drawings and design sketches, often with strict lines and a clear structure.
Although he was somewhat forgotten after his death, there has been renewed interest in his oeuvre in recent years — as a representative of a generation of artists who built a bridge between academic tradition and the emergence of a more narrative, human painting. Jean Pezous leaves behind an oeuvre that reflects the 19th century in its layering: sensitive, consistent in form and always looking for the right moment of expression.
