- About the artworkBroer Dobbelsteen was a versatile artist from Brabant who became best known for his colorful and expressive paintings. Although he was originally trained as a designer at the academy in Eindhoven, he changed course in 1964 to devote himself entirely to fine art. His work, often centered on human figures and abstract forms, is distinguished by its vibrant use of color and a highly personal, recognizable style. Until his death in 2019, he remained a prominent figure in the Geldrop region, where he spent many years building a body of work that continues to appear frequently in collections and at art auctions.
Dobbelsteen’s oil paintings are known for their powerful, expressive character, strongly influenced by the CoBrA movement. He employed a distinctive technique, often working with thick layers of paint (impasto) and a rough, spontaneous brushstroke.

Dimensions with frame: 127 × 147 cm - About the artist
Broer van den Dobbelsteen (1936–2019), better known as Broer Dobbelsteen, was a Dutch artist from Geldrop who distinguished himself through a lively, expressive visual language. His work is characterized by powerful colors, spontaneous brushwork, and a direct, intuitive approach to form and composition.
Dobbelsteen worked from a strong personal drive and developed a recognizable style that balances between figuration and abstraction. His paintings and drawings often depict human figures, landscapes, and everyday scenes, but distorted and simplified to their essence. The focus was not on realistic representation, but on the emotional charge and energy of the moment.
Throughout his career, he remained true to this free, unpolished way of working. His oeuvre radiates a sense of spontaneity and zest for life, in which color and movement play a central role. As an artist, Dobbelsteen managed to carve out his own place within Dutch post-war art, with work that is both accessible and personal.
