  • About the artist

Badru Temitayo from Nigeria is a locally and globally celebrated artist for his hand-embroidered portraits of unique individuals, each of whom has become striking symbols of power in their own meaningful way.

Take Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu, who fought for the release of kidnapped schoolgirls. Or Tobi Amusan, the "Nigerian Femke Bol," who brought her country to ecstasy by setting three world records and representing Nigeria at the Paris Olympics. And then there's George Floyd, who was killed by police in Minneapolis in 2020. His violent death sparked worldwide Black Lives Matters protests against racism and discrimination.

These works were on display at Museum Rijswijk in 2023 as part of the "Images of Power" exhibition, and Badru was rightly voted an absolute crowd-pleaser by visitors. As a reward, a solo exhibition followed at the end of 2024, in which he also exhibited several beautiful hand-embroidered self-portraits and portraits of family members. Badru has won many (inter)national awards, including the Best Textile Artist Prize in Nigeria three times!
