  • About the artist

Sierk Schröder (Ambon, 1903 – Wassenaar, 2002) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and portraitist who had an exceptionally long and productive career. He was known for his refined technique, his psychologically lived portraits and his adherence to the figurative tradition, especially at a time when abstract and experimental art was becoming increasingly dominant.

Born on Ambon in the Dutch East Indies, Schröder returned to the Netherlands at a young age. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where he received a thorough academic education. He developed a preference for the human figure at an early age, particularly in the form of portraits, which would take a central place in his oeuvre.

In his portraits, Schröder not only sought an outward resemblance, but above all for character and soul. He often managed to capture his models in a subdued manner, with a subtle psychological depth. His style is realistic, sometimes with a classical slant, but never rigid – on the contrary, his work shows a lively brushwork and a great sense of colour and composition.

In addition to portraits, Schröder also painted landscapes, still lifes and figure pieces. He was a master in depicting light and atmosphere, and his work testifies to a solid craftsmanship that was developed with great dedication. He worked for a long time in The Hague and later in Wassenaar, where he remained active in his studio until old age.

Schröder was a member of Pulchri Studio, among others, and received wide recognition, both in the Netherlands and abroad. He exhibited frequently and his work was purchased by museums, companies and private individuals. Despite the rise of modernist movements, he remained true to his conviction that figurative art has a lasting power of expression.

Sierk Schröder is regarded as one of the most important Dutch portraitists of the twentieth century. His work unites classical beauty with human depth and forms an impressive testament to dedication, craftsmanship and artistic integrity.
