Michel de Klerk, (1884-1923) è stato un architetto e leader della scuola di Amsterdam, che ha enfatizzato l'individualismo, la fantasia e il pittoresco nel suo design architettonico. De Klerk ha lavorato come disegnatore, poi ha studiato in Scandinavia, per poi tornare ad Amsterdam. Il suo Hille Building (1911) è considerato il primo esempio della scuola di Amsterdam. La sua opera più importante è stata l'Eigen Haard Estates (1917-21), che mostra la calda umanità del design di de Klerk e la sua attenzione alla tradizione olandese dell'architettura popolare.
