  This watercolour of a firethorn, or pyracantha, was made by Dutch artist and illustrator Johan Briedé. The sheet contains a single branch of the shrub, with its bright orange-red berries. The artist signed the work with pencil, right below the pencil sketch of a detail. He probable created the work in Castellar, near Menton in the South of France, on 11 December 1954.

  Deze aquarel van een vuurdoorn werd vervaardigd door de Nederlandse kunstenaar en illustrator Johan Briedé. Het blad toont een enkele tak van de struik, met helder oranjerode bessen. De kunstenaar signeerde het werk met potlood, net onder de potloodschets van een detail. Hij maakte het werk waarschijnlijk in Castellar, vlakbij het Zuid-Franse Menton, op 11 december 1954.

  Johan Briedé (1885-1980), noto anche come J.B. de Chateauroux, è stato un grafico olandese di Rotterdam. Nel 1910 ricevette una sovvenzione dal professor Arend Willem Maurits Odé per studiare alla scuola di arti e mestieri di Amsterdam. Due anni dopo iniziò le lezioni alla scuola di arti e mestieri di Haarlem, dove Chris Lebeau, Willem van Konijnenburg e Geraldo Abraham Brender à Brandis erano i suoi insegnanti. Briedé era multidisciplinare, sapeva disegnare, dipingere, litografare e incidere. Ha preso ispirazione per le sue opere durante i suoi viaggi in Europa, ha visitato diversi paesi come Svezia, Spagna, Maiorca e Francia. Il soggetto principale delle sue opere è la natura e soprattutto gli alberi. Dalla sua barca nel canale di Hilversum studiò le piante acquatiche. Ha lavorato come artista freelance per diverse aziende, editori e riviste, ad esempio ha creato varie rilegature, copertine e illustrazioni per W.L. & Uitgeversmaatschappij di Rotterdam di J. Brusse. Briedé è stato professore alla scuola di arti visive di Roermond e successivamente ha insegnato in diverse scuole a Rotterdam, L'Aia, Haarlem e Amsterdam. Sposò Mary Grietje Brandsma nel 1912 e la coppia si trasferì più volte nei Paesi Bassi. Nel 1980 Briedé morì dopo una vita molto produttiva
