  Under a sunny sky with towering clouds a Dutch ship sails. More Dutch vessels can be made out in the middle zone and further in the distance.
  
  A Swedish three-master under full sail approaches from the right middle ground. Between the two coastlines a stiff breeze makes the waves go up. The torn flags tell us the ships have survived even heavier weather. The long shadows on the choppy water add another dramatic note.
  
  The scene takes place off the Swedish coast on the Sound, a narrow strait between present day Denmark and Sweden where Dutch mercantile ships sailing to the Baltic had to pass through. The Dutch called their trade with countries bordering on the East Sea their “moedernegotie” (mother-trade). As the backbone of their economy this trade was of fundamental importance to the Dutch Republic.

  Jan Abrahamsz Beerstraaten (batizado em 1 de março de 1622 em Amsterdã - enterrado em julho de 1666 em Amsterdã?) Foi um pintor holandês de arte e paisagens marinhas, particularmente de eventos da Primeira Guerra Anglo-Holandesa e Guerra Holandês-Sueca. Existe alguma confusão sobre a identidade de quatro pintores de paisagens chamados Beerstraaten; Johannes, este Jan Abrahamsz, Abraham e Anthonie. Jan Abrahamsz, pintor, casou-se em Amsterdã em 30 de agosto de 1642. Deste casamento nasceram onze filhos, e quando ele se casou pela segunda vez em 1665, uma filha nasceu. Atualmente, o RKD registra Johannes como a mesma pessoa, e Abraham Beerstraaten é considerado seu filho mais velho. Anthonie Beerstraaten foi relacionado a este pintor. O RKD registrou duas pinturas assinadas por Anthonie van Beerstraten: uma é uma vista de um porto marítimo do sul de 1664 (atualmente localização Enkhuizen) e a outra uma vista de uma igreja em Aarlanderveen na antiga prefeitura de Alphen aan den Rijn. Com base nessas duas pinturas, C. Hofstede de Groot, um dos primeiros historiadores da arte holandesa, classificou as pinturas assinadas por A. Beerstraaten como de Anthonie se fossem de pior qualidade do que as já atribuídas a Abraão.
