    Under a sunny sky with towering clouds a Dutch ship sails. More Dutch vessels can be made out in the middle zone and further in the distance.

    A Swedish three-master under full sail approaches from the right middle ground. Between the two coastlines a stiff breeze makes the waves go up. The torn flags tell us the ships have survived even heavier weather. The long shadows on the choppy water add another dramatic note.

    The scene takes place off the Swedish coast on the Sound, a narrow strait between present day Denmark and Sweden where Dutch mercantile ships sailing to the Baltic had to pass through. The Dutch called their trade with countries bordering on the East Sea their “moedernegotie” (mother-trade). As the backbone of their economy this trade was of fundamental importance to the Dutch Republic.

    Jan Abrahamsz Beerstraaten (battezzato 1 marzo 1622 ad Amsterdam – sepolto nel luglio 1666 ad Amsterdam?) è stato un pittore olandese di arte e paesaggi marini, in particolare di eventi della prima guerra anglo-olandese e della guerra olandese-svedese. C'è una certa confusione sull'identità di quattro paesaggisti di nome Beerstraaten; Johannes, questo Jan Abrahamsz, Abraham e Anthonie. Jan Abrahamsz, pittore, si sposò ad Amsterdam il 30 agosto 1642. Da questo matrimonio nacquero undici figli e quando si sposò una seconda volta nel 1665 nacque una figlia. Attualmente, l'RKD registra Johannes come la stessa persona e Abraham Beerstraaten è considerato il suo figlio maggiore. Anthonie Beerstraaten era imparentato con questo pittore. L'RKD ha registrato due dipinti firmati Anthonie van Beerstraten: uno è una veduta di un porto marittimo meridionale del 1664 (attualmente località Enkhuizen) e l'altro una veduta di una chiesa ad Aarlanderveen nell'ex municipio di Alphen aan den Rijn. Sulla base di questi due dipinti, C. Hofstede de Groot, uno dei primi storici dell'arte olandese, ha classificato i dipinti firmati A. Beerstraaten come di Anthonie se fossero di qualità inferiore rispetto a quelli già attribuiti ad Abramo.
