About the artist

Albertus Charles Andre Tanama, Andre Tanama, born in 1982 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is a versatile artist and lecturer at Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta. He received his Sarjana Seni with honors from ISI Yogyakarta in 2005 and completed his Magister Seni in 2010, also with honors.

In his artistic career, Tanama has received several awards. For example, in 2006 he was the winner of the second Triennale Seni Grafis Indonesia at Bentara Budaya Jakarta and was recognized as one of the 40 best young artists in Indonesia by Jogja Gallery.

In 2007, he received the Academic Art Award I for printmaking from FSR ISI Yogyakarta and a grant for creation in printmaking from the Ministry of National Education.

Tanama's work is characterized by three unique characters:
Wayang Monyong, Gwen Silent and Agathos. Wayang Monyong is a deformation of a human head, born from personal worries and daily concerns.

Gwen Silent, a girl of 4-5 years old with closed eyes and no mouth, symbolizes the discrepancy between perception and reality.

Agathos acts as a counterpart to Gwen Silent, similar to the yin-yang principle, and represents the balance between inner and outer world.

His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, with solo exhibitions such as "The Tales of Gwen Silent" in Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta and Jakarta, and "Agathos" in Langgeng Gallery, Magelang. He has also participated in group exhibitions in countries such as the Netherlands, Singapore and Italy.

In addition to his artistic activities, Tanama is active as a teacher at ISI Yogyakarta, where he shares his knowledge and experience with emerging artists.
