About the artist

Arij Pleijsier (16 April 1819 – 12 May 1879) was a prominent Dutch marine painter of the late Romantic period, born in Vlaardingen. He specialised in seascapes, storm and shipwreck scenes, coastal and river views, beach and dune views, night scenes and depictions of important maritime events. His work was highly regarded in his time, and he had clients from the highest circles.

Pleijsier lived and worked in Rotterdam for most of his life. In 1852 he moved to Amsterdam, where he became a member of Arti et Amicitiae. He travelled along the coast of Normandy and the Baltic Sea, which influenced his maritime works. His paintings are in leading museums in the Netherlands and abroad.

After his death, Pleijsier fell somewhat into oblivion among the general public. Recently there has been renewed interest in his work, with exhibitions and additions of his paintings to museum collections, such as in Museum Vlaardingen.
