About the artist

David Urban (born 1966 in Toronto) is widely regarded as one of the leading Canadian painters of his generation. Renowned for his vibrant and expressive abstract canvases, Urban has developed a distinctive visual language that moves fluidly between abstraction, landscape, architecture, and representation. His paintings are characterized by energetic brushwork, layered textures, rhythmic geometries, and bold collisions of color and line, creating works that feel both spontaneous and deeply constructed.

Born and based in Toronto, Urban studied both literature and visual arts, earning degrees in painting, English literature, and creative writing. His multidisciplinary background in poetry, music, and art history strongly informs his artistic practice, giving his paintings a lyrical, improvisational quality often compared to jazz composition or visual poetry.

Urban’s work occupies a fascinating borderland between pure abstraction and recognizable imagery. Fragments of landscapes, interiors, structures, and symbolic forms emerge and dissolve within dense painterly surfaces, inviting viewers into an ongoing exploration of perception and memory. His paintings often balance tension and harmony simultaneously, combining modernist abstraction with emotional immediacy and references to everyday experience.

Over the course of his career, Urban has exhibited extensively throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. His works are included in numerous important public and private collections, and he is recognized for his significant contribution to contemporary Canadian painting.
