About the artist
Jae Yong Kim (born 1973 in Seoul, South Korea) is a contemporary artist who transforms ceramics into a playful and sophisticated art form. His work, often colorful and glittering, invites interaction and reflection, playfully exploring the boundary between art and consumer culture.
Kim received his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the University of Hartford and continued his studies with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Ceramics from the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art. This academic background gave him a strong technical foundation in ceramics, but also the freedom to reinterpret traditional techniques and experiment with new forms and materials.
Kim’s work has received worldwide recognition and has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions at renowned institutions including the Powerlong Museum, Waterfall Mansion & Gallery, and the Gwangju Museum of Arts. His unique style, which combines playful pop culture elements with artisanal perfection, has earned him a place in contemporary ceramic art.
Kim is best known for his ceramic donuts, a series of sculptures that humorously and seductively reflect on materialism, desire, and mass consumption. Often adorned with brightly colored glazes, Swarovski crystals, and metallic finishes, his handmade donuts evoke an irresistible attraction. They play with the idea of desire—both in the culinary and artistic sense—and challenge the viewer to consider the boundary between art object and consumer product.
His work balances between craft and pop culture, elevating ceramics to an expressive and interactive medium. He uses techniques ranging from traditional ceramic processes to cutting-edge finishes, giving his sculptures an almost surreal quality.
In addition to his artistry, Kim is currently a professor of ceramics at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. His academic role allows him to pass on his knowledge and passion for ceramics to the next generation of artists. He divides his time between Seoul and New York, two cities that continue to inform his work and perspective with diverse cultural influences.
Jae Yong Kim’s art is more than just aesthetically pleasing—it’s an exploration of desire, abundance, and the power of visual seduction. By transforming an everyday object like a donut into a luxurious work of art full of refinement and irony, he invites us to rethink our relationship with consumption and beauty. His work continues to evolve and challenge, and his influence on contemporary ceramics continues to grow.
