Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana is an influential Balinese artist, art theorist and academic whose work explores the boundaries between tradition and contemporary art. Born on April 4, 1976 in Bangli, Bali, Kun grew up in an environment where artistic expression and spiritual values ​​are deeply rooted in daily life. This rich cultural background forms the basis of his artistic practice, which brings together Balinese iconography and contemporary visual language.

Kun has proven himself to be a versatile artist with an international reach. His work has been exhibited in Indonesia and worldwide, including the United States, Taiwan and Australia. He has won several prestigious art awards in Indonesia, underlining his position as a leading artist in the region.

In addition to his artistry, Kun Adnyana is also a respected academic. He received his Master of Art Studies (M.Sn) and later a PhD in Art Studies from the Postgraduate Program of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta. His research focuses on the dynamics between traditional and contemporary art in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on Bali’s cultural identity in a globalizing world.

His academic career has taken him to prestigious institutions, including the Gwen Frostic School of Art at Western Michigan University, where he was awarded the Visiting Scholar Award in 2013. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Denpasar (ISI Denpasar), where he inspires and mentors young artists and researchers.

Through his work as an artist, teacher, and researcher, Kun Adnyana continues to innovate and position Balinese art within the broader global art scene. His oeuvre is a dialogue between the past and the future, rediscovering the essence of Balinese culture in a fresh and meaningful way.
