David Giorgadze, born in Georgia in 1967, is a post-war and contemporary artist whose work combines the rich tradition of Georgian painting with a distinctly personal, contemporary visual language. His oeuvre includes paintings that often seek a balance between figuration and abstraction, between emotional expression and formal control.

Educated in Georgia, Giorgadze developed his style within the context of a country that was undergoing profound political and social change during his youth and early career. That transformation—from Soviet republic to independent state—is reflected in the layering of his work. Although he has a strong technical foundation, his work is never purely academic; it is imbued with symbolism, atmosphere and inner tension.

Giorgadze’s paintings are characterized by a muted use of color, subtle textures and often enigmatic compositions in which human figures, architectural elements or landscapes appear and fade away. This visual poetry invites the viewer to contemplate: what is shown, and what is hidden? Time plays a central role in much of his work—memory, decay, repetition—as if each canvas were a still moment in a larger story.

As a contemporary Georgian artist, Giorgadze is represented in numerous galleries and exhibitions, both in Georgia and abroad. His work is part of private and institutional collections in Europe, Russia, and the US. He is one of the artists who are shaping the international interest in Georgian art in the 21st century, and is helping to position Tbilisi as an emerging center for contemporary art.

David Giorgadze remains true to a visual language that is neither fashionable nor noisy, but rather layered, sensitive, and searching. His paintings are like whispering voices from another time—quiet yet charged, intimate yet universal.
