Wim van der Veer (Leeuwarden, 1 August 1939) is a Dutch expressionist painter, known for his lively depictions of the Frisian landscape. His work is often compared to that of Gerrit Benner, Bouke van der Sloot and Simon Kamminga.
Early Life and Education
Van der Veer was born in Leeuwarden and developed a passion for art at a young age. In 1960 he joined 'It Frysk Palet', a collective of Frisian artists, and a year later he became a member of 'de Boun fan Fryske Kunstners'. He graduated in 1975 from the Academie Minerva in Groningen, where he was trained as a graphic artist and painter under the supervision of Jan Stroosma.
Career and Artistic Development
In the late 1970s Van der Veer stayed on Ameland, where he painted a series of eighteen landscapes. These works were acquired by the Amelander Musea in 2018 and show his characteristic style: expressive brushstrokes and a vibrant use of colour that captures the dynamics of the Frisian landscape.
During his career, Van der Veer exhibited in various museums, including Museum Belvédère, the Fries Museum, Museum Princessehof, Museum Martena and the Hannemahuis. His work mainly consists of landscapes and portraits, and he is estimated to have produced more than a thousand paintings, etchings and drawings.
Style and Influences
Van der Veer's paintings are characterised by an expressive style, with an emphasis on the Frisian landscape. His work is often compared to that of Gerrit Benner, Bouke van der Sloot and Simon Kamminga.
Publications and Recognition
In 2004, the publication "Wim van der Veer, painter of the country, water and portraits" was published, followed by "Fryslân in yellow, green and blue, life and work of Wim van der Veer" in 2014. These works offer a comprehensive overview of his oeuvre and his contribution to Frisian art.
Wim van der Veer remains a prominent figure in the Frisian art world, with an oeuvre that captures the essence of the Frisian landscape and its inhabitants.
