  • About the artist

Edmond Marie Petitjean (Neufchâteau, 1844 – Paris, 1925) was a French painter and watercolourist who distinguished himself as a master of the Impressionist landscape and maritime scene. His oeuvre, rich in light, movement and atmosphere, reflects a lifetime of travelling, observing and capturing the changing beauty of France and its coasts.

Originally trained in law, Petitjean soon chose painting, against the wishes of his family. He developed largely self-taught, but with a keen eye for composition and colour, influenced by the Barbizon school and later Impressionism. His subjects ranged from harbour views in Brittany to river landscapes in Lorraine, and he had a particular predilection for reflections in water and the drama of skies.

Petitjean exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and later at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he won several prizes. He was distinguished at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and 1900, and was awarded the distinction of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. His work was not only appreciated in France, but also found its way into collections and exhibitions internationally.

In addition to oil paintings, he also made watercolors, prints and illustrations. His style evolved from realistic to increasingly loose and impressionistic, in which he managed to capture atmospheric effects and the play of light on water in detail. Petitjean remained active until old age and left behind an extensive oeuvre that is still praised for its poetic power and his refined technical mastery.
