  • About the artwork
    Sierd Geertsma (1896–1985) was a Dutch artist from Appelscha. He studied at Academie Minerva in Groningen, where he was taught by the painter Arnold Willem Kort (1881–1972). Geertsma mainly painted the Frisian landscape, with a special focus on the area surrounding his hometown of Appelscha.

    Sierd Geertsma (1896–1985) was a prominent Dutch painter, watercolorist, draftsman, and printmaker, born in Appelscha. He played an important role in the artistic life of Friesland and was considered the only professional visual artist in the Ooststellingwerf region until the mid-1960s. From his studio, he captured the Frisian landscape, village scenes, and daily life with great sensitivity.
