  • About the artist

Ninet Kaijser (b. 1970) is a Dutch contemporary artist whose work unfolds at the intersection of patience, precision, and quiet observation. Based between Haarlem and Halfweg, she has developed a distinctive practice centered on large-scale drawings executed entirely in colored pencil—a medium she pushes to remarkable depth and subtlety.

Kaijser’s works are built up through an intensive, almost meditative process of layering, in which countless fine strokes gradually accumulate into expansive, immersive surfaces. What initially appears delicate reveals itself, on closer inspection, as highly controlled and labor-intensive. This tension between fragility and endurance is central to her artistic language.

Her imagery is rooted in landscape, yet never strictly representational. Drawing inspiration from coastal environments—shorelines, dunes, shifting horizons—Kaijser distills these natural impressions into serene, semi-abstract compositions. Time seems suspended in her work: there are no figures, no narrative markers, only atmosphere, rhythm, and space. The result is a visual stillness that invites prolonged looking and introspection.

Rather than capturing a specific place, Kaijser evokes a state of being—an emotional geography shaped by light, repetition, and subtle tonal transitions. Her drawings function as quiet fields of attention, where the act of making is inseparable from the experience of viewing.

Through her meticulous technique and restrained visual vocabulary, Ninet Kaijser creates works that slow down perception and open up a contemplative space, bridging the physicality of drawing with the immaterial qualities of memory and landscape.
